Small Group Counseling

What is small group counseling?

Small group counseling is a focused small group of students who meet with me on a weekly basis to discuss either a specific topic, such as grief, or a more broad topic, such as emotions. These students work together to gain understandings of the topic and how it relates to them, the world, and whatever else they might need to. I guide the sessions to help students gain knowledge of the topic chosen to lead students to success. Small group counseling is also a great way for students to understand that though they may feel alone and that no one understands them, there are others going through similar things. It's also beneficial for students to hear other perspectives on their thinking.

What are the goals of small group counseling?

Most groups main goal is to provide support to students experiencing similar thoughts, feelings, and emotions. But there are some other benefits and goals to Group counseling as well.
  • Help students see they are able to provide support as well as receive it
  • Explore solutions and outcomes
  • Learn and practice interpersonal skills in a safe space
  • Work on observation, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Allows for students to express thoughts and feelings
  • Gives students a sense of belonging
